Products/Services Provided by NCSHTC to North Carolina Schools

The NC School Health Training Center offers workshops for teachers and other school personnel in the skills-based North Carolina Essential Standards in Healthful Living Education. School systems may request training in additional health education topics. Some workshops must be offered on a for-fee basis.

Making Proud Choices Logo

Making Proud Choices (MPC) is an evidence-based program which teaches a safer sex approach to HIV, STDs and teen pregnancy prevention. (More Details)

 

 

What Do Kids Need to Know and When Do They Need to Know it? (puberty education and parent-youth communication)  is a six-hour workshop to assist teachers, counselors, and nurses of 4th, 5th, and 6th grades to teach puberty education. The training also includes a component on how to advise parents and guardians to talk with their children about sexuality issues.

 

Are You in Your Comfort Zone?  was developed to help middle and high school teachers be more confident teaching the sensitive topics in sexuality education, and meeting the requirements of the Health Youth Act. 

Parents Matter Logo Parents Matter is a 2-day worshop for training facilitators who will conduct workshops for parents of 9 - 12 year olds.  This skill-building workshop provides materials and strategies for recruitment.

  

Comprehensive School Health Education

  • Successfully Teaching Middle/High School Health are workshops based on the NCAAHPERD-produced manuals of the same name. Trainers model and demonstrate creative and participatory activities that meet the objectives in the NC Course of Study in Healthful Living Education.
    • Soft-copy (USB drive) of the middle and high school manuals can be purchased here.
  • Using Technology to Teach Health (middle and high school)  covers resources and activities accessible to teachers on the web. The workshop covers how to find reliable resources for health content.
  • Violence and Anti-Bullying Prevention Education is a 6-hour workshop for teachers and school counselors at the middle and high school levels. Topics include anger management, conflict resolution, stress management, responsible decision making, and resistance skills. Activities and materials from several evaluated curricula are shown.
  • Life Skills Training (LST), a nationally known curricula, has been shown to reduce the use of gateway drugs (tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, marijuana) in all populations studied. The goal is to reduce risk-taking behavior by increasing social skills. LST is a middle school program with booster sessions.
  • Project TNT (Towards No Tobacco) has been identified by the CDC as a Program That Works in reducing the use of cigarettes and spit tobacco. Intended for middle school, this curriculum is a skills approach to prevention that aligns well with the NC Course of Study in Healthful Living Education.
  • My Plate and More! is a 6-hour workshop for middle and high school teachers covering the nutrition and fitness objectives in the Essential Standards.  This workshop includes My Plate, Dietary Guidelines, food labels, meal-planning, and obesity prevention.
